chipping day - July 20, 2023
Since 2018 the Maine Forest Service has been helping reduce the risk of wildfire on Harfords Point by chipping brush that residents have cleared from their property. They can accommodate 20 camps and there is still room to be included in the program this year. This is a terrific way to improve your property and make the Harfords Point a safer place for all of us.
You can download and print the application below and either email it to harfordspoint@gmail.com or mail it to HPA PO Box 669, Greenville, ME 04441. (The application is the same as 2022.)

Maine Forest Service Chipping Day 2018
In the fall of 2017 the Maine Forest Service conducted a wildfire assessment of Harfords Point during which they surveyed 30 random properties on the Point. They assessed for access, response time, availability of water, and vegetation near structures. The average score was 48 (50 is high). In his presentation of these findings at the HPA Annual Meeting in August, Kent Nelson told members that the best thing homeowners can do to prevent the spread of wildfires is to clear vegetation (particularly softwood) within 30 feet of their structures. To help with this, the forestry service has a free annual chipping program available to communities who have participated in the wildfire assessment. The Harfords Point chipping day took place on August 16 with nine homeowners participating. This is an annual program so we are eligible to do this again next year with even more (up to 20) property owners participating.
Thank you to the Maine Forest Service. The chipping was carried out by Kent E. Nelson, Fire Prevention Specialist, and three students from the University of Maine at Fort Kent Forestry Program, Jeff Hill, Alex Trask, and Hateya Levesque. And thanks as well to Point resident and HPA Board Member Dave Sinclair for helping out and guiding the crew around the Point. Well done everyone!
