Old Business
Road and speed: Sophie Sevey thanked Tom Perry for the orange markers which draw attention to the road speed signs. The South Shore road has a yield sign but there is no yield sign where Davis Ridge Road merges onto Northshore Road. Members are urged to use caution at both intersections.Atkinson: Sophie Sevey wrote a letter asking the State to keep landowners informed and apprised of meetings about this issue. (Last year, all voters were informed, but not landowners.)Many thanks: Sophie Sevey thanked Joe Brooks for mowing the Kliem lot for the picnic. She also thanked Joe and his wife Theresa for cooking at this year’s picnic. Sophie also recognized Becky Dobbin for her trash pick-up on the road.
New Business:
Directors: Charlie Quimby was nominated from the floor and added to the ballot which included Dave Sinclair, Herb Olsen, and Tom Perry running for re-election. Members cast their ballots by voting for up to 4 candidates. The following directors were elected: Dave Sinclair, Tom Perry, and Charlie Quimby, Herb Olsen.Boating issues: Philip Lander reported an incident where he encountered boaters on the lake who were argumentative and aggressive. The boaters backed down when Philip offered to summon the game warden. He urged members to do the same if they encounter difficulties with boaters.Forest Department: Philip Lander arranged for the Maine Forestry Service to talk with the members. Sam Heffner and Nicholas Bolduc attended and Sam provided a description of the Forestry Services’ approach to wildfire control. They are the first responders and law enforcement for wildfires in Maine.
Sam are reminded that homeowners are responsible for making sure that their homes are defensible. He described a free service of the Maine Forestry Service in which Kent Nelson will come to your home to do a wildfire risk assessment. This review will score your home in terms of survivability, looking at the distance from first responders, availability of water, roofing materials, litter, gutters, eves, vents, crawl spaces, siding, wood piles and the 30 foot perimeter. Having this assessment done allows homeowners to access other services such as use of a chipper for cleared material. Sam distributed a sign-up sheet for members to request the risk assessment.
Prizes: Sophie Sevey started a new annual picnic tradition of awarding prizes to members who travel the furthest (Darlene Oliver), those with the longest-standing ownership (Carol Whitney), and the newest member (check new).
Philip Lander inquired about activity on Moose Island and whether there is movement to create parking or a marina on the mainland to serve the island. Keith Smith said that there is no activity currently.
Duane Lander expressed concern about pedestrians on the road and their lack of visibility. In honor of Omar Higgins, a longtime owner and Harfords Point walker, he donated two fluorescent vests for walkers to use. He also reminded people to walk on to the left in order to face oncoming traffic.
Website: Sophie Sevey has started a facebook page which is a closed group for members only. Those who would like to participate can request on fb and Sophie will approve.
Wind turbines: Bill Peet inquired about the HPA taking a stand against the turbine project. Sophie Sevey reminded members that the HPA is not an advocacy group and cannot take a position. There are community groups that members can join to express their views.
The next annual meeting will be held on August 4, 2018.
Sophie Sevey adjourned the meeting at 12:30.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Nevins
HPA Secretary
Voted during the picnic to continue community donations: Unanimous approval. We regret that the vote didn’t happen during the meeting.
